As your family’s routine changes, use this checklist to help your pet transition safely and comfortably.
✔ Before School Starts
- Gradually adjust feeding times to your school-year schedule.
- Begin shifting walk and potty break times.
- Practice leaving your pet home alone for short periods before the first day of school.
- Create a comfortable resting area where your pet feels safe
✔ Daily Routine
- Provide fresh food and water.
- Give your pet plenty of exercise before leaving for the day.
- Offer enrichment toys such as puzzle feeders or long-lasting chews.
- Rotate toys regularly to keep them interesting.
- Spend quality time with your pet after returning home.
✔ Home Safety
- Keep backpacks, lunchboxes, and school supplies out of reach.
- Store medications safely.
- Keep harmful foods away from pets, including: Chocolate, Grapes & raisins, Onions & garlic, Xylitol (birch sugar) products, Fatty table scraps.
- Secure trash cans and food containers.
✔ Prevent Escapes
- Check that your pet’s collar fits properly.
- Make sure identification tags are current.
- Verify your pet’s microchip information is up to date.
- Watch for open doors during busy morning routines.
✔ Watch for Signs of Stress
Contact your veterinarian if your pet develops:
- Loss of appetite
- Excessive barking or vocalizing
- Destructive behavior
- House soiling
- Excessive licking or grooming
- Withdrawal or hiding
- Changes in sleep habits
✔ Preventive Health
- Wellness exam is up to date.
- Vaccinations are current.
- Heartworm prevention is current.
- Flea and tick prevention is current.
- Intestinal parasite prevention is current.
